CCA’s “800” project trains Connecticut attorneys to provide pro bono legal representation for youth who receive DCF 800 discharge notices or would like to re-engage with DCF. Who are the youth we will represent?

Older foster youth can age out of DCF care without any permanency options in their lives . . . 30% of the foster care population in Connecticut ages out without finding a permanent family.  Many receive notification of DCF’s intention to discontinue their support after age 18.

Why don’t these youth have attorneys already?
In Connecticut, youth are no longer entitled to an attorney once they turn 18, despite still needing help.

Why is this work important?
Connecticut extends foster care supports to age 23 if youth are enrolled in educational, vocational, or employment programs. Factors such trauma history and lack of support systems often make it challenging for youth to remain in care so they can be safely housed and continue their education.

Legal help is key to ensure youths’ safety and their ability to complete education or vocational training and find employment.
