Community Legal Aid: Medical-Legal Partnership Special Education Law Training
Topics:
- Civil Rights
- Access to Justice
- Education
Community Legal Aid received a two-year grant from the Legal Services Corporation to build a medical-legal partnership with UMass Memorial Health Care. The partnership will provide legal services to low-income patients who are receiving care through an innovative new primary care model being implemented at three primary care sites at UMass Memorial Medical Center, which serve a high number of Medicaid patients. We are reaching out to community partners and advocates who may be interested in joining this initiative.
Social and economic factors, including education, greatly impact the health of low-income, minority and other marginalized communities and interfere with clinical providers' ability to effectively and efficiently improve the health of their most vulnerable patients. Through the partnership, clinical providers who have been trained to screen for health-harming legal issues will refer families to Community Legal Aid. We invite you, a private bar attorney, to join us in addressing the health-harming legal needs of our youth by taking on a special education case.
At this training, you will learn:
- About Medical-Legal Partnership
- The barriers that low-income families face in navigating the special education process
- How to describe the principles that provide children with a right to an appropriate education
- How to prepare for and succeed at an IEP meeting
- How to quickly access pro bono educational resources
Speakers:
Alina Kantor Nir, Staff Attorney, Community Legal Aid
Jena C. Gutierrez, Pro Bono Coordinator, Community Legal Aid - Volunteer Lawyers Service
By volunteering with this partnership, you can help a child thrive.
COST: By attending this free training, participants agree to accept two pro bono referrals during the project.
Please feel free to share with any colleagues or friends who may be interested. This will be the first in a series of Medical-Legal Partnership trainings offered by Community Legal Aid. Please look forward to upcoming events!
