The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty is holding a webinar entitled COVID-19 and The Human Right to Housing on May 20 , 2020 from 2:00 PM-3:00 PM Eastern.
The spread of COVID-19 has shed necessary light on the need for a right to housing. Individuals without stable housing face greater difficulty taking preventative actions and are more vulnerable to an outbreak of highly communicable diseases. The United Nations has issued guidance to protect the human rights of homeless people during the pandemic, including people living in encampments, and to prevent evictions.
Featured Speakers:
- Maria Foscarinis, Founder & Executive Director of the Law Center
- Leilani Farha, Global Director The Shift, Former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing
- Assemblymember Rob Bonta, Represents Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro in the California Assembly (18th AD)
- Additional speakers to come
Questions to be examined:
- How can US advocates use this guidance to protect people experiencing homelessness in their communities?
- Looking beyond the current crisis, what does the human right to housing mean, and how can we use this critical moment to push for and lay a foundation for it here in the US?
