Achieving Justice for Our Warriors: How to Navigate Discharge Upgrades

Veterans are entitled to benefits administered by the VA once their service has honorably ended. However, a veteran’s service may be interrupted and terminated earlier than expected due to perceived misconduct. In actuality, the misconduct can be symptoms of mitigating circumstances such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, or Military Sexual Trauma. For many reasons, these are not considered at the time and they are discharged with characterizations that affect their entitlements.

There is an administrative appeal process to correct a veteran’s discharge, though it can often be time-consuming, confusing, and emotionally draining for a veteran to pursue on their own. Attorneys can provide veterans with the advocacy they need and deserve to correct an injustice. Most clients who need these services are seen as failures, addicts, homeless, and other negative associations. In reality they are heroes with invisible military wounds in need of aid from a lawyer who understands/empathizes with their situation.
