Contact with the criminal legal system can create unique risks and complications for an immigrant client. The Immigrant Defense Project Helpline provides individualized analysis of the effect of any contact with the criminal legal system on a person's immigration status, and gives clear, accurate, individualized advice to legal service providers by serving as crim-imm experts. This training is intended to provide information to attorneys, DOJ accredited representatives, and their support staff on how to provide competent and diligent representation to their clients by using IDP’s hotline. The training will explain how IDP’s experts can help attorneys meet their ethical duties to provide legal representation to clients who have had contact with police and the criminal legal system. It will also give updated instructions and best practices for how to request IDP’s services through the helpline.
