The Philadelphia Bar Association is hosting a video conference entitled Protecting Our Elderly: World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, 2021 from 10:30 AM-11:30 AM.
Presented by the Probate and Trust Law Section’s Elder Law and Guardianship Committee.
Elder abuse is a legal crisis, a public health crisis and a human rights crisis, both here in Philadelphia and around the world. Through this webinar, we hope to bring both awareness and tools to protect our elderly population from the abuse, neglect, and exploitation experienced by so many. The elderly need our advocacy now more than ever.
Panelists:
- Honorable Sheila Woods-Skipper, President Judge Emeritus, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas
Judge Woods-Skipper will discuss both the role of the judiciary in protecting our elderly, and the resources available to our elder citizens via the Elder Justice & Civil Resource Center at City Hall. - Brenden Corbalis, Assistant Director – Victim Services, SeniorLAW Center
Mr. Corbalis will discuss the various types of elder abuse and the possible legal remedies for each. Using examples of current and past cases, he will address how both the COVID-19 and opioid pandemics have placed older adults at higher risk for physical abuse and financial exploitation. - Najja Orr, President and CEO, Philadelphia Corporation for Aging
The Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA), one of 52 area agencies on aging in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, receives federal and state funding to support more than 140,000 older Philadelphians annually. PCA includes the Older Adult Protective Services Program, which supports older adults at risk for elder abuse. Mr. Orr will summarize the critical services and supports that assist older residents at risk for abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, and abandonment.
What needs to be improved upon and valued more than ever is the care for and treatment of those who have been on this planet longer than ourselves. Everyone must recognize and regard the importance, worth, and wisdom that every senior brings to the table. This generation deserves to be heard — not hidden, silenced, trivialized or abused.
Advance registration is required through the Philadelphia Bar Association and registration closes 30 minutes prior to the meeting start time. You will receive the link to join the video conference immediately after registration closes.
