Barriers to Access to Justice in Massachusetts (Report of the Access to Justice Commission, June 2007)

Recognizing that people without the means to afford legal representation face "numerous, substantial barriers to justice in the Commonwealth," the Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court formed the Access to Justice Commission in June of 2005. The Commission sought to identify those barriers to justice and find ways to surmount them. Among the Commission's many recommendations to the Judiciary was to "continue to encourage lawyers to act pro bono for low-income persons and to encourage lawyers' financial assistance for legal service efforts." The full report is attached.
